Kingston in Bloom winners "overwhelmed"

A woman inspired by her late son to carry on gardening was among the winners at this year’s Kingston in Bloom.

Patricia Cotgrove’s garden in Surbiton was crowned the best back garden at a ceremony held by mayor Mary Heathcote at her parlour in the Guildhall last Friday.

First place in the best front garden category went to Jacquelyn Rayner, while the Mary Rollinson community award went to residents on the School Lane estate.

Mrs Cotgrove, 74, who started gardening more than 50 years ago, said she kept the garden going for her son as he was watching down on her.

Mrs Rayner, who is retired but volunteers at Kingston police station, said her victory had inspired her to keep up with her gardening.

Geraldine Finucare, who picked up the award on behalf of her fellow School Lane residents, said the friends will have a little party to celebrate.

Graham Rollinson dedicated his second place finish in the best front garden category to his late wife Mary.

Coun Heathcote, who also helped judge the competition, thanked the Surrey Comet and John Lewis, who put up the prizes, for helping Kingston in Bloom go ahead.
