After the first six weeks of the recycling trial, Kingston council have announced that the collections have been successful, with green box recycling almost doubling, more than 3.5 kg of additional organic and cardboard waste collected per household, and a reduction in waste sent to landfill from 7.73 kg to 4.47 kg per household per week.
The council says that only 4% of people said it was a problem by the third collection day, down from 7% and 11% in the first two fortnights.
Councillor Liz Shard, Executive Member for Sustainability and Biodiversity at Kingston Council added, "The waste minimisation and recycling rates achieved since the Berrylands trial began really are remarkable."
Every local authority in the country has been set a target by central government of achieving a 65% reduction in the amount of biodegradable waste sent to landfill by 2020.
The prospect of fortnightly collections being introduced across the whole of Kingston and other London boroughs has moved a step closer now that the trial has been hailed a success.
