The theme to this latest exhibition at the cornerHOUSE is that variety is the spice of life.
Spice of Life! Explorations of the Natural World, which runs throughout July at the arts centre in Douglas Road, Surbiton, contains a broad body of work which represents artist Hilary Walker's expression of ideas through different media.
The work ranges from pencil drawings to paintings and etchings, to highly abstract photographs - all of which are framed and for sale at special exhibition prices of under £100.
"Variety is the overriding theme here," said the Surbiton artist. "Using different techniques for the expression of ideas gives a fuller opportunity for creative exploration."
"As an artist I like to explore the creation of images through different media. I don’t like to be tied to one style or type of subject.
"My inspiration usually comes from the natural world, but I am interested in the interaction of colour and shape and sometimes will develop an idea into an abstract form that is far removed from the original starting point.
"The qualities offered by different techniques produce different results; every person has many facets to their character and using different media allows this be to expressed."
Hilary's love of the natural world and of Japanese art and culture provides the inspiration to her art. During a visit to Japan in 2010, she was given permission to photograph black belt training sessions at The Kodokan in Tokyo, the home of judo. The Fundamentals of Judo, published in December 2012, contains images of specially commissioned paintings of her work. Hilary has exhibited at various venues including The Victoria and Albert Museum, Virgin Atlantic First Class Lounge in London and New York, Mall Galleries, The Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond, and the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington, among others.
Members of the public are invited to attend a gala evening of the show at the arts centre on Tuesday, July 16 between 7-9pm. Hilary will be at the gala and will be talking about her work and answering questions.
