The people of Surbiton have some front going on telly to complain about the tree. The tree is not ugly its the way the business rate payers are treated every year by this council thats ugly.If the people of Surbiton shopped local that would help bring in the money for the shops to help with lights etc,i know Surbiton is famous for its charity shops but we are not all charity shops and some of us are trying to run PROFITABLE shops here and as most of our money goes to the council anyway they should be putting up the decorations etc.....
Here, here, all you shopkeepers are being gouged with usurious business rates and then find that your customers cannot park easily. I know Waitrose has 2 hours free but anyone with a newish car avoids it as the yummy mummy 4x4 brigade cause mayhem downstairs, especially around school times.
Very disappointing lights.
I think that this thread actually refers to the last time Surbiton had lights in 2007!
In 2013 the lights are back. Definitely 'understated' to say the least, but I am very grateful for them in comparison to what we have had for the past 5 years. My only gripe is that I'd like to have seen the extended down Claremont Road as it would have been nice to have had all of the newly installed bakc lamposts covered with lights.
There's a petition doing the rounds on twitter.

I think that is a bit harsh personally. The tree is small and disappointing compared to previous years, but if I were Waitrose management and saw that petition, I'd probably be inclined not to bother at all in future years.
Clearly, the ITV coverage is taking the p*ss a bit saying that the tree is stuck on a roundabout with the arrow lights still on. It is not that bad, and is certainly better than a lot of town centres have got.
I am not sure why the campaigners think that the tree should be brought 'inline with the keeping of Surbiton'. Surbiton is a lovely little town, but it is actually very badly kept so I don't think a slightly under-sized Christmas tree makes it any worse at all.
It could be that the tree is small this year because they normally tie a few to the lamp post. Any bigger and it would fall into the road.
The one in the roundabout has been removed as part of the street light changes. Not sure if they're replacing it or not.
Moaning about the Xmas lights in Surbiton is a Xmas tradition nearly as old as Christendom itself. Long may it continue!
The tree is pretty ugly this year - far less willowy and flimsy than it normally is, but we are going to need something solid and pear-shapped to survive the killer Arctic storms headed this way.
Who is switching them on? What festive fun is in store?
They're to be switched on by non-other than Father Christmas himself. Apparently there'll be carols as well. I can't wait.
I've updated the description.
