Head for the hills
The duelling banjos of John Boorman’s 1970s classic Deliverance may or may not appear in Upstage’s latest production at the cornerHOUSE, but we’ll certainly get plenty of suspense thanks to a family of strange, eccentric and scheming hillbillies.
Hide and Shriek, a black comedy by prolific playwright Tim Kelly, is set in the wild backwaters of Arkansas.
The plot revolves around a jealous woman, a missing girl, a runaway, a pot of money, fraud, mysterious strangers, and last but not least, revenge. Sounds familiar? Well, if you liked Upstage’s last show, It was a Dark and Stormy Night, which brought the house down at the arts centre in Douglas Road, Tolworth, then you’ll adore this one, also penned in the same vein by Kelly.
Chris Smith, who has directed four other shows including Comfort & Joy and The Government Inspector, said: “This is a challenging production to direct, but it is a show that everyone will enjoy.”
Tickets are £8 (£6 concessions). Call Rosemary Barett at the box office on 07963 951901 or email upstage@hotmail.co.uk to book.
