There does not seem to be much activity in this list but being the optomist that I am here goes.
I am moving to Surbiton next week (from Guildford) looking foreward to a better rail connection, good pubs and a shorter drive to work in Croydon.
There seems to be 10 people on the list so how about introducing yourselves, tell me something that I didn't kow about Surbiton or something.
My main perceptions of it so far come from "Stella Street" and I hope to move in near to Michael Cane <g>.
Hope to hear from someone soon....
Tim

I agree that B&Q did let the build deteriorate and become a dump(paint was always out of stock!). It is just a pity that Waitrose did not have the vision to either restore and use the facade (a la Weatherspoons), or knock down the whole parade from Lloyds Bank to Elsa Brown and start again.
Either way, they should have had brick finishings and an appropriate scale.
To my eye, it looks like a spaceship which has landed on the parade and wedged itself in. I almost prefer the Nuffield Hospital building which is an absolute eyesore and totally out of character, but at least it does not pretend to be anything else.

Surbiton station was restored in 1997/8 and is now an architectual gem (seriously) with Grade II listed status. I can see it from my window. It is a beautiful gleaming white and is painted with anti-graffitti paint which means that it can be cleaned easily. If you don't believe me take a look at these pickies.
Railtrack may have a crap safety record but they are good at doing up old buildings. If you want further proof of this go and have a look at Paddington station- an incredible improvement.
Point taken, we do need a nice hardware tool, but by god that new building looks better than that s****y B&Q shop.
HELLO ... Would somebody write an email to me down on the Costa del Sol .. and tell me how much Surbiton has changed since 1973-4 .... any required info. about southern Spain will be promptly given from me. How did the person who was about to move to Surbiton get on. Did it rain on moving day.
And I would be interested to know how much Surbiton station has changed over the years. I thought it was a depressing place .. it may have changed.

Its a supermarket, and pretty large. The site used to be a cinema, then a B&Q for many years. The architecture is not to everyone's taste - too modern and out of scale for Surbiton - and we have lost the useful facility to nip down the road on a Sunday for a few bits of wire etc for the DIY projects. What we really did not need was yet another place to buy food etc.

Hi Tim
We have lived in Surbiton for thirty years. It is excellent location if you have to be convenient to London, the airports etc. Also surrounded by Royal parks, the Kingston Shopping centre, and the river, it offers plenty of amenities. I always think its main virtue is the absence of any over flying aircraft noise except for Concorde on Saturday mornings.
The best pub is the Waggon and Horses. Waitrose has just opened and immediately becomes the best supermarket.
WE work mainly from home and commute between Surbiton and the Swiss Alps
Hi,
Oh no!!! Waitrose in Surbiton.
That's just too kitsch - have they built a mini mart style one like the Sainsbury's that we seem to collect around here, or have they gone the whole hog and done the Supermarket thing?
Tim
Ok,
I can't spell and my spell checker for some reason is unfamiliar with the star of Get Carter / The Ipcriss Files (or whatever it was).
Stella Street is a silly "skit" sit com set in Surbiton following the daily Lives of Michael CAINE, Mick Jagger and the like. It's quite funny as it kind of emulates the dramatic presence of such classics as early Crossroads et al. I know its not filmed in Surbiton but I can understand the link that people make - the retired Rolling Stones running a corner shop selling daily essentials to their has been peers. You either love it or loathe it and I can understand Surbitonites feeling a little "poked at" for it.
Fun though...
Tim.
TWO POINTS.. NEVER HEARD OF STELLA STREET AND MICHAEL CANE IS SPELT CAINE... I THINK. DENISE
HELLO EVERYBODY .... IT IS VERY ENCOURAGING THAT SOMEBODY HAS WRITTEN ABOUT SURBITON. NOW THERE SEEM TO BE TWO OR THREE MORE. PLEASE SOMEBODY WRITE TO US DOWN HERE ON THE COSTA DEL SOL. WE ARE NOT YOUNG FOLK BUT I FEEL VERY YOUNG INDEED AND ENJOY WRITING EMAILS TO PERSONS DAFT ENOUGH TO WRITE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Denise Martin
As far as I know, Stella Street isn't even filmed in Surbiton.
It is quite a small street and I don't recognise the street or the corner shop.
Is Surbiton's new Waitrose cool or what ?
HI TIM .... What a fantastic turn-up for the books. At long long last somebody has written from Surbiton@Onelist ... I joined a few months ago, because I used to live in Esher and caught the train to Surbiton where I worked for a big pharmaceutical co. What fun, I said to myself when I joined the Internet, fancy that.. a list for Surbiton.. And I joined right away. not a titter so I emailed the owner and he said it wasn`t very active... do your best to stir up things. New blood could be just what is needed. We live in Spain nowadays.
