Wiggins and Armitstead aim for gold in time trial event

Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins and road race Olympic silver medallist Lizzie Armitstead will carry medal hopes today as the Olympic cycling time trial comes to Kingston and Surbiton.

Wiggins starts as the favourite. Riders set off at 90 second intervals so tactics cannot cruelly rob the Brits of victory.

Beginning at Hampton Court the riders will race along Portsmouth Road in Surbiton on the return leg into Kingston past Queen’s Promenade, before arriving in the Market Place.

Leaving the Market Place by Thames Street the riders will cycle past All Saints Church before making a sharp left over Kingston Bridge and into neighbouring Richmond.

Road closures along the route are expected to cause traffic congestion across Kingston and Surbiton with several roads affected.
