How lovely are thy branches? Surbiton residents protest the town's "disappointing" Christmas tree

It is now officially Christmas and this can mean only one thing in Surbiton – is the Christmas tree good enough?

In 2013 Surbiton’s Waitrose, who had sponsored that year’s tree, was presented with “the most middle class petition” to improve the “ugly sight” that sat in the middle of the roundabout near the station.

Two years on, some residents have been left disappointed with the tree, yet again. Complaints that the pine tree sponsored by local businesses does not have enough decorations, lights or sparkle have been voiced. In fact, some have even gone so for as to suggest residents should add their own decorations in a guerrilla-style takeover.

The Surbiton Business Community, made up of business owners and councillors come together to plan Christmas events and decorations in Surbiton each February.
