Drivers could be forced to slow down throughout Surbiton town centre if councillors vote in a new 20mph speed limit.
Kingston Council officers have recommended the scheme be waved through at a meeting next Tuesday. But police opposed a limit in St Marks Hill, Claremont Road and Surbiton Hill road, on the grounds enforcing it would take up too many resources. Responses in support of the £6,000 scheme outweighed objections by almost three to one, with 13 objections and 34 messages of support.
Officers expect the 20mph zones to be self-enforcing, the report said.
Councillors will vote on the scheme at a meeting at Dysart School, next Tuesday, September 2 at 7.30pm.
