Surbiton Farmers’ Market has reached the final of the prestigious Farmers’ Market of the Year Award, organised by the National Farmers’ Retail and Markets Association.
The 2012 FARMA Awards will be presented by celebrity cook Clarissa Dickson Wright of TV’s Two Fat Ladies, at a ceremony in Edinburgh on Tuesday January 31.
One of seven finalists, the Maple Road market will be up against markets in Ely and Saint Ives in Cambridgeshire, Lewes in East Sussex, Moseley in Birmingham and Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. The only other finalist from the London area is Queen’s Park Farmers’ Market.
All entrants have been ‘mystery shopped’ as part of the judging process and the judges have visited each finalist to make their assessments. The winners will be announced at an Awards Dinner at the Farm & More show this month.
The small group of volunteers who organise Surbiton’s market will be hoping to repeat their recent success in a local awards scheme. In November, the market was recognised for its Commitment to the Community in the Kingston Business Awards.
Maple Road Surbiton Farmers’ Market is a Community Interest Company organised by and for the local community. In the two years since it began, the market has helped to raise more than £20,000 for local charities and good causes.
The Farmers’ Market takes a break in January and will then run on the third Saturday of each month throughout 2012, starting on Saturday February 18.
