A Surbiton High School pupil from Cheam defeated more than 2,000 entrants to win a National Portrait Gallery photography competition.
Year 9 student Flossie Hillis scooped first prize with her image, “Quintessential”, which features her grandparents who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. The competition ran as part of the Martin Parr “Only Human” exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, and her photo will be displayed there until early June.
Mr Parr, who was born in Epsom, judged the nationwide competition before he decided to award Flossie with first prize. He said he chose the photo as the winner of the competition because he was “attracted by the symmetry and intimacy of the piece” – as well as its red cushions.
Her photograph will remain on display at the National Portrait Gallery until June 4.
