Music & Movement Classes for Preschool Children

I am an Early Years Community Music Leader and aim to bring enjoyment and empowerment to children in all parts of the community using the voice and body.

Yo Baby started up in February 2005 and has been running weekly classes since at various venues. Classes are currently held at the Surbiton Library Hall and the Surbiton YMCA.

My weekly classes are for parents/carers to attend with their children. The classes introduce children to music, percussion instruments and beautiful songs from around the world. They are encouraged to move throughout the session and develop social, memory, listening and speech skills through fun games.

Not only will the children improve the set of skills above but songs are included to help develop their singing voice. Throughout the class the children will use their whole body feeling the pulse (heart beat) of the songs or chants by clapping, stamping, moving, playing percussion instruments - this will enable them to feel the music and a sense of time. This skill is vital to be a good musician and singer.

I also run weekly classes at a private nursery in Surbiton called Childs Play for 2 - 5 year olds.

Other areas of work Yo Baby's been involved in: Local Library Singing Sessions, Sure Start Centre's, Baby Clinics, Pupil Referral Units, Young Mum Groups, Kingston's Maple Unit for children with disabilities, Schools, St Georges CAMHS Unit and various fund raising events for charities.

Yo Baby is member of Music Leader, Sound Connections, Musicians Union, British Kodaly Academy.
