The devastating effect which human trafficking continues to inflict on vulnerable individuals is explored in the event - ‘Unseen Traffik’.

Unseen Traffik is an unforgettable account of sexual slavery as it exists today, brought to you through drama, dance and an exhibition. The play tells the harrowing story of a young girl who is trafficked from Nepal to India. We follow Lakshmi’s journey as she is sold by her step father into the sex industry at the young age of 13 and realising the harsh reality of debt bondage. Andrew Rosindell, MP for Romford where the show was first performed, said “I was extremely moved by this performance, which really brought to light the issues surrounding modern-day slavery”.

The event culminates in a charity auction giving members of the audience an opportunity to contribute funds to ensure that organisations like Stop The Traffik can help vulnerable girls like Lakshmi around the world. Prizes currently include tickets to Chessington World of Adventure, Spa vouchers and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Whisky; a full list will be released on the website www.unseentraffik.co.uk closer to the event.

The event at the cornerHOUSE is being hosted by Active Communities against Trafficking: London (ACT) and ACT Kingston. These community groups operating across the country consist of dedicated volunteers working together to raise awareness of, and combat, human trafficking in their local area. They are affiliated with Stop The Traffik, a global movement of individuals, communities and organisations fighting to prevent the sale of people, protect the trafficked and prosecute the traffickers. The proceeds of this event will be split between the work of London ACT and Stop the Traffik and there will be volunteers around to whom you can direct any questions during the interval or after the show.

Tickets cost £7 or £5 concession and go on sale on the 30 January. You can reserve tickets through the box office on 020 8296 9012. The seats are available on a first-come first-served basis so book early to avoid disappointment and arrive early to get a good seat – performance starts at 7:30pm. We recommend that the appropriate viewing age is 15 and over.

Unseen Traffik first took place as part of Stop the Traffik’s Campaign ‘Start Freedom’ in November 2009. The event successfully raised £4,000. These vital funds were donated to the ‘Start Freedom’ Campaign and to the Aruna Project of Oasis India; which seeks to change the lives of women caught up in the commercial sex industry.

Due to its covert nature human trafficking is extremely difficult to detect and prevent. Human trafficking operates through individuals, families and organised criminal networks. Caroline Shephard Director of Unseen Traffik said “it is often considered that human trafficking is limited to places like Thailand, Eastern Europe and India. The simple fact is that it is happening on our doorsteps in the UK and the problem continues to grow”. So, come and explore the realities of slavery in the 21st century.
