Ten years. Billions of pounds spent. Some 140,000 serving foreign troops. Over 11,000 military casualties. Nine thousand civilians dead, 7.5 million refugees. This is Afghanistan today. But it is also home to millions of citizens and returning refugees.
Afghan Monologues at the cornerHOUSE on Saturday, February 25, shines a spotlight on the lives of Afghan men and women and Western commentators on the frontline.
Professional actors voice the words of:
Guy Smallman - a photojournalist who travels through Afghanistan and documents the stories of the country's civilians.
Emilie Jelinek - who lived and worked in Afghanistan for seven years, mostly with the United Nations.
Aziz Hakimi - who organised nationwide public education campaigns and has worked as policy adviser for President Karzai and as a human rights adviser with the UN in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
And an Afghan man and woman who agreed to talk about their experiences on the understanding that they would remain anonymous.
This Fire and Ice production is directed by Miichael Longhurst and is brought to the Douglas Road, Surbiton, arts centre by Kingston Amnesty. It has been scripted by Christine Bacon who directed Rendition Monologues at All Saints Church in Kingston last year.
Because of its hard-hitting material, Afghan Monologues is not suitable for children under the age of 14. Children under 16 should be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
Tickets for the performance which starts at 8pm are £6 (£4 concessions). To reserve your tickets phone the box office on 020 8296 9012.
