The Beast of Surbiton. Can you help? Have you heard it?

We live in the vicinity of Manor Drive, Surbiton. On multiple occasions this Year, we have heard a very strange noise. It has happened in the evening, between 10pm and 3am, lasts for several minutes and can only be described as deeply disturbing. The noise does not sound human, it sounds like a large animal, wandering the streets, howling in pain moving from North to South along Manor Drive. This sound is not a Fox or any other UK domestic or wild animal. Its hard to believe that this sound could be created by a Human, it is so erratic and incoherent and, to be honest, scary. It sounds like a Beast. Have you heard this sound? Do you know of anyone who lives in this area that may have heard the sound? Please help us to track down the Beast of Surbiton!

We too live on Manor Drive. We believe it not to be the religious folk (far too late in the evening, as far as we can tell they keep to the traditional mass times), but what we have dubbed 'heavy metal guy'. He regularly walks down Manor Drive late at night shouting in what can only be described as in the style of the lead singer of a Death Metal band. Seriously. General screaching, wailing, etc, along with some slightly more worrying rambling conversations with himself.

The 'Mary Tree' gang, as we will call them can often be seen walking along, carrying the statue, looking like some kind of funeral march. Though, they don't carry it back, they strap old Mary to the top of their Volvo like some sort of boyed up, over the top version of the Rolls Royce angel, and she is driven back, it is a sight to behold! Maybe the wailing is coming from the statue itself? It moans 'please don't strap me to the roof of that car again'.

Right, I say we congregate around the 'Mary Tree' at midnight, with axes, cross-bows and pitchforks and we slay the beast!

Tell me more about this "Mary Tree" - it sounds a real laugh.

Is the "Mary Tree" mob the same loonies who wander along The Avenue, Avenue South, Manor Drive, & Berrylands, carrying lanterns? I always have a good old guffaw when I see those drips. I thought religion was supposed to be "Happy, Happy"; but that bunch look so damned miserable ... !!! Not a very good advert for the consolations of "faith"!

Loonies? Bit harsh.

No, I have researched copulating foxes online (just the audio, no video ;o)) and this sound is MUCH worse. Any other ideas?

I tried posting annomously earlier, but fear my post was removed by the powers that be as my tale was too terrifying and may put off visitors to the fair on Saturday.

I too have heard the beast! It has awoken me on several occasions as I live nearby and have had my window open over the summer, I'm just glad I live on the 2nd floor and it can not get in! Some say it is human, either a local who is in pain from throw out time of the Brave New, or just one of Surbiton local crazies (and there are a few of them roaming the streets in day light!). However other theories suggest that it could be a spawn of the devil sent from some hell mouth trying to undo the good from the "Mary Tree" in Adams Close!

I for one just want to find out what it is as it's whail is truely haunting.

I too have heard "the beast". It definately is not foxes, more a deep wail than a fox screech. Some say it is a random drunk after chuck out time from the Brave New, some say though that it is one of Surbiton's care in the community (and we all know we have a fair few of those), but some say it is a beast from hell prowling the streets late at night as it is always near the "Mary Tree" of Adams Close... I for one though just want to find out as it has awoken me many a time and once heard it is hard to get back to sleep as so eerie and scares you to your mortal soul.

And you're sure it's not copulating foxes?

That's dangerously close to where I live... I'm going to catch the beast and there can be a parade in my honour!
