Lower Marsh Lane
My family and I are just considering buying a family home in Berrylands near the station. A couple of friends have asked if we are aware of the smell from the sewage works? Could anyone out there let me know whether its as bad as some people make out or if its very rare. We love being in the garden and sitting out in the summer so would we be best to look elsewhere for a house? Thanks for any advice in advance.

We live in Villiers Close, the part round the corner of the close. I don't think I've ever smelt any smells coming from the sewage, even on days where when I've walked home from Berrylands station past the sewage works and it has been smelling, by the time I'm past the cemetery I can't smell anything anymore. We sit in the garden a lot in the summer and have the windows open etc, and no smell. So if buying a house in the area, I'd say visit on a few different days in the area and do your own smell tests by just being there, you should get an accurate sense of it.
When I lived in Norton Avenue you could smell it on the odd summers day so it does travel a bit.
Believe me - you do not want to be down wind from the sewage works. I recall my train journeys via Berrylands - people were retching...
It all depends on the prevailing wind on the day.
If from the NE or NNE it can whiff a bit between the station and Surbiton, otherwise its fine as the South or Westerlies blow any whiff towards London
i lived in eversley road off villiers road i lived there 25 years and my family always complained about stench every summer

I've lived there for over 3 years and admit you sometimes get the rare whiff. It seems like they are trying to keep the pongs at bay. I don't think it is as bad as it used to be, but occasionally something nasty can escape.
It really depends how near to the sewage works you are. The station is very close.
It is an up and coming area, but unfortunately this is a problem.
It should be renamed Stenchampstead.
