Yesterday’s Bank Holiday rain cancelled a Surbiton beach party but failed to put a dampener on the organiser’s spirits.
Despite the forecast residents persevered with the Brighton Road street party plans on Monday morning, setting up bouncy castles, Punch and Judy displays and sand. Organiser Robin Hutchinson even enlisted the help of Surbiton’s fire brigade to fill up paddling pools.
Despite the weather forcing the cancellation Mr Hutchinson insisted it was still a success. The seaside themed affair was set up to re-imagine how the average street party is perceived and would have also included palm trees, giant windmills and pop-up fish and chip shops to create a classic beach vibe.
The group ended up having a makeshift beach party in The Lamb pub and Mr Hutchinson plans to reorganise the street event for August Bank Holiday next year.
