Victoria Road
A ‘floating’ riverside cycle path and a ‘super skyway’ alongside Kingston Bridge are on a final shortlist for a share of £100m from the Mayor of London, writes Joshua Brown.
The 700m style route from Anglers Green to Thameside was nominated with seven other outer London boroughs. Kingston Council also wants to offer ‘super hubs’ at Surbiton and Kingston stations with parking spaces for as many as 6,500 bikes in Kingston town centre.
Councillor Simon James, Kingston Council’s lead member for transport, said the proposals now needed to be developed and fine-tuned. Former BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan, the Mayor of London’s cycling commissioner will visit Kingston to see the proposals in person. A final decision on which three or four councils will receive money is expected early next year.

There are clever ways to invest the money. Cyclists should be consulted about it.
A far better idea would be a cycle/foot bridge over the River Thames to Hampton Court Park from Surbiton. I'm pretty sure that this will count on with plenty of support from the whole comunity.
This would allow many cyclists to cross the bridge and enjoy the whole riverside including Bushy park. Cyclists could cross back to North Kingston to enjoy Richmond and the other side of the riverside without the need of going through Kingston towncenter.
I have friends with kids, and they don't like the idea of cycling with their kids by Portsmouth Road.
How can we promote this idea?
I'd be very much in support of that. It has been talked about for years, but the extreme amount of money required has always made it a no-go. Now this cash is a reality, I think it would make a far better way to use it than the other plans.
It would provide direct access to 3,000 acres of parkland, half of which is currently criminally under-used anyway. Surbiton would move even closer to the perfect compromise of a place to live - 15 minutes train to London for work, 5 minutes walk to that much parkland on top of all of the other benefits we already have.
That would be a really positive use of the funds.
