A Surbiton carpenter who fraudulently claimed £18,000 in tax repayments has been sentenced.
Alan Byrne, of South Terrace, falsified expense claims and amount of tax paid in his self assessment returns between 2012 and 2016.
He repeatedly told HMRC officials he could provide invoices to back his claims up, but never did. In total, he received £18,499 in tax repayments he was not entitled to.
Byrne, 35, pleaded not guilty, but was convicted of six counts of fraud at Kingston Crown Court on January 9, and was sentenced at the same court on April 30.
He was given a two-year sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay £4,882.20 in costs.
