Residents oppose plans for 40ft phone mast in Surbiton

Angry residents are fighting plans by Vodafone and O2 to erect a 40 foot high telephone mast in Surbiton.

Last week residents were informed that the phone companies had submitted a planning application to Kingston Council to build a 11.8 metre telecommunications pole and 1.89 metre equipment box at the corner of Raeburn Avenue and Meldone Close.

The companies will share the site so they can provide better 3G coverage in the area.

Residents are furious at the plans - which they believe are intrusive and dangerous - and have set about creating an online petition in protest.

Mother of two and Meldone Close resident, Liz Broughton, 36, said: "We're very concerned about these plans, this mast would be less than 500 metres from two schools, Christ Church Primary and Grand Avenue.

"The mast is also much bigger than any mast gone up before, way above the tree line and the houses.

"There are a huge proportion of children in the area, what about the health risks? I've written to Ed Davey MP and all the councillors, as we have not got long to get our objections in.

"Everybody that I've spoken to is terrified about it. It's going to be a major cause of obstruction as it will be on a grass verge, making it difficult for people to cross the road, especially children going to and from school.

"We have identified that we need to improve 3G coverage to our customers in Surbiton and have proposed a shared base on the junction of Meldone Close and Raeburn Avenue."
