@MPSKingston A burst main is jetting streams of water metres into the air in a Surbiton street.
Kingston police officers took this picture of the burst pipe in Oak Hill Road, with the water reaching as high as the roofs of houses.
Residents are being advised to avoid the area.
A Thames Water spokesman said: “It appears from our investigation that the problem was caused by unauthorised use of a hydrant.
“Our engineers were on the scene within half-an-hour of getting the call and were able to shut the leak off more or less straight away.”
Thames Water is currently working on replacing water mains across the borough, with some estimated to be about 200 years old.
