Remembrance Sunday services across the borough will remember the fallen

The borough will pay tribute to fallen soldiers with military parades and services this weekend.

There will be a two minute silence across all four corners of the borough on Remembrance Sunday. Poppy wreaths will also be laid down at war memorials in Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and Chessington before commemorative services begin in each area. The services will honour British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women who lost their lives in the First World War, Second World War and later conflicts.

Mayor Penny Shelton will attend services in New Malden and Kingston where there will be a parade, while deputy mayor councillor Alan Dean will be at the Surbiton service where he will do a bible reading at Surbiton Hill Methodist Church.

Earlier this year poppy appeals in both New Malden and Surbiton were under threat as the Royal British Legion were unable to find organisers to front the campaign for poppy collections. But the Surrey Comet was able to help find two suitable candidates after a series of articles.

A parade beginning at 10.45am will march from the Surbiton British Legion in Hollyfielld Road to Ewell Road, past the war memorial and then back up Ewell Road where Deputy Mayor Alan Dean will take the salute on the steps of Surbiton Hill Methodist Church.
