Kingston Council apologises after Surbiton mini-Holland roadworks overrun

Kingston Council has apologised after overnight roadworks overran in Surbiton - causing rush hour chaos for commuters and waking up furious residents.

The council closed Portsmouth Road for drilling and resurfacing works this weekend, but were delayed into Monday morning due to a “breakdown in plant equipment”. The engineering works were supposed to finish at 6am. Residents took to social media to complain about the noise and disruption, with some claiming the overnight works kept them awake.

The road is being redeveloped as part of the council’s mini-Holland project, also called Go-Cycle, a £33m initiative to build European-style cycle tracks across the borough. Numerous buses had to be diverted due to the delay, with some residents reporting seeing traffic backed up to Surbiton station at rush hour this morning. Kington town centre councillor Jon Tolley tweeted that the council’s decision to drill the road overnight was “unreal”. In July, residents complained after Portsmouth Road was closed with just a few hours notice for last-minute Ride London preparations.
