The Mayor of London Boris Johnson made a surprise visit to Surbiton yesterday.
He met fellow Conservatives outside Surbiton station and did a whistle stop tour of local shops and businesses along the Victoria Road, even stopping to pull a pint in the Surbiton Flyer. Chamber members Karen Powell from The Creative People and local business owner Richard Sealtiel (owner of the Surbiton Flyer, Gordon Bennetts Wine Bar and Maple Works) were some of the lucky people to spend some time with him.
His trip to Surbiton was kept secret as Boris’ popularity often means be gets mobbed on public outings so this surprise visit gave him the opportunity to spend more time meeting real local people and businesses. He was in the borough to promote the Kingston Conservative’s campaign for 30 minutes free parking ahead of this May’s local elections.
Apparently he was asked about visiting the Tolworth Greenway and said: “Wild horses wouldn’t keep me away. I’m seldom away from Kingston.”
He also commented on this week’s award of about £30m for Kingston cycle schemes saying: “It doesn’t look very dutch at the moment. I’m looking forward to seeing the plans there as well.”
