Boris Johnston fended off difficult questions about train station zoning on a walk about in Surbiton as he drummed up support in his bid for re-election.
The London Mayor was responding to claims he had broken a promise to help move Kingston and Surbiton stations from zone 5 to zone 6, placing the blame on Lib Dem MP Edward Davey and train operators. He backed the campaign before his election in 2008, even saying he would stump up the cash, but emphasised he has no powers to push South West Trains to make the move.
A spokeswoman on behalf of Edward Davey said the Energy Secretary was meeting with relevant minsters and still pushing for the re-zoning.
On Monday's walkabout, down St Mark’s Hill, through Surbiton station and then off down Victoria Road, Boris promised better police presences in the borough and talked about his bike scheme coming to Kingston. He had spent the earlier part of the day talking to shop keepers and residents in Chessington.

The story states Boris has "broken a promise to help move Kingston and Surbiton stations from zone 5 to zone 6"
I thought Surbiton and Kingston were in Zone 6?
If so surely he has kept his promise?
I personally would have preferred that Surbiton was moved to Zone 5 or 4 so that fares would be reduced on going to London.
You're right, the reporter has it the wrong way round.
Boris did, of course, break his promise to rezone Surbiton station from Zone 6 to Zone 5.
Quite bizarrely, a recent election leaflet by Boris repeated his broken promise of support for rezoning Surbiton. As if we'd somehow all forgotten that he'd promised us 4 years before. Surely, he can only treat Surbitonians like fools for so long before we all wise up.
Do not vote for this serial blagger and non-deliverer. He's taken us for fools once - don't allow him to do it again.
