More than 100 miss out on preferred school place

More than 100 children in the borough have missed out on a place at their preferred primary school.

Although 78 per cent of the 1,960 applicants in Kingston were accepted to their first preference of school, six per cent failed to get into their primary school of choice and will now start at a school in September that was not top of their list.

A Kingston Council spokesman said 102 of these children have been offered an alternative and the remaining 18 will be tracked and offered a place.

The process, which sees families name six primary schools in order of preference, saw 163, or eight per cent, of Kingston children get into their second preference and 75, or four per cent, get into their third. Hundreds of Kingston pupils will be joining schools with bulging classes that have been educated in temporary classrooms after the council was hit by a rising birth rate and fall in pupils in private schools since 2008.

Several schools in Kingston have expanded and the authority has started work on a brand new school in Surbiton, Lime Tree Primary, which is due to open in September. The two-form entry school, which featured in an ITV News report on what local authorities are doing to help meet the demand for primary school places, will cater for 420 pupils, as well as 21 pupils with Special Educational Needs.
