The plans to develop floating homes and a marina on could leave a positive legacy on the town, it has been claimed.
MP for Kingston and Surbiton Ed Davey has waded into the debate on the plans by Hydro Properties to build 60 homes, a new lock, a nature reserve and an education centre on the former Thames Water land off Portsmouth Road.
The company is hoping Surbiton will be the first location in the UK to use new floating technology.
Mr Davey, who along with residents has fought numerous developers in the past, believes that these proposals are the first he's seen that could benefit the community.
In April, residents were invited to give feedback on the scheme when the plans were displayed at three day exhibitions.
During these exhibitions, residents highlighted concerns about the height of the development and the provision of moorings alongside the Thames and the marina.
Following the feedback, the company announced that it would take these points into consideration and draw up an amended scheme.
The company is expecting to submit a planning application to Kingston Council this summer.
If planning permission is granted, building on the site would take around 15 months, with work expected to start in the middle of 2012.
