The problem of fly tipping has been an issue on the Sunray Estate, Surbiton for many years.
Domestic items such as fridges, mattresses and garden waste have been dumped in the many service roads behind houses. This has caused the service roads to look untidy and uncared for, which in turn has attracted anti social behaviour. Officers from both the Alexandra and Berrylands SNTs conducted an environmental audit of the service roads and liaised with the Sunray & Egmont Residents Association (SERA) with a view to helping them with their idea of organising a clear up of affected areas.
Our environmental audit showed that the worst affected areas were between Hazel Bank/Vincent Avenue, and the Elmdene service road. We were able to source £440 from the Joint Action Group to help pay for the clear up. This money was passed by the Met directly to Kingston Council and was used to hire two skips and other equipment to help with the clear up. SERA put the word out amongst their members and a provisional date of 24th March was set.
On the day, over 30 local residents joined forces with the Safer Neighbourhoods Team and spent several hours clearing the rubbish, which had amassed over time. With residents and Police working together, we were able to take a significant step in clearing the area, which will hopefully in turn lead to a reduction in further dumping and the related anti social behaviour.
