Raeburn Avenue
When is a swimming bath not a swimming bath? – “When it is a Lagoon!”
The Lagoon was built on 2.5 acre site in Raeburn Avenue. The bath was a showpiece. The stepped terrace held thousands of spectators at swimming and water polo events.
After closing in 1979 for repairs it was left falling into even more disrepair. It was left to rot for 10 years. There were attempts at giving the loved Lagoon a face-lift. Despite efforts of reprieve the turnstiles finally came to a standstill, and the local resident’s saw the removal of their former paradise. The treasured memories will survive.

I have lived in Surbiton most of my life, and used to the lagoon most day after school meeting friends it was a really special place for the community, later on I and thousands of families spent the schools holidays there. I even had my wedding reception there.
I and most of the community felt their was no intention for it to be restored, as planing was always the real plan and as usual with no intention of letting the People know the real purpose. It was to build houses on the site. And must have realised about flooding to the area because of the hogsmill river, most residents will remember the pumps pumping out water under the now footing of the new houses the whole time they were being build, where on earth did the planers and architects think the pumped river water would go
The results of this is the river has rerouted and many gardens in the Elmbridge red and other areas have very bad flooding of course nothing will done about this as.
I know read the council may be planing a new swimming pool we will see. My suggestion would be to turn the very ugly bowling alley in to a Kinston type rotunda with community swimming, bowling, and cinemas. So that local family's and once again have fun days in their local town.
