Police close The Cresent after discovering weapons cache.
Police confirmed today that they had found drugs and weapons in a house in the road, while looking for a missing person, who was not in the property. Around 80 police officers and firemen with emergency vehicles filled the street at 1pm.
Allan Lochhead, who was at his girlfriend's flat waiting for the gas man, said, "The police said they had found a suspected package of explosives in the park. At about 4pm the police cars, vans, fire engines and ambulances left as quickly as they had arrived."
Update:
Police are now investigating the possibility that the flat's missing occupant could have been the still unidentified Surbiton station October suicide victim.

Wow! This is pretty big news for Surbiton. Of course, this could be a classic example of Met police over-reaction, as per the comment on the Surrey Comet website -
"so basically they found an eighth of skunk a pen knife and a toy grenade?
can someone explain why '80' police and firebrigade were needed for that?"
Even so, it is strange that this is the third incidence of this sort of bust in Surbiton in the last few months. I have lived here for 15 years, and I don't think I can recall anything like this happening before.
I guess that this just reflects the escalation of this sort of thing everywhere, rather than Surbiton becoming the new crime hotspot of SW London.
