A railway worker who was hit by a train has died. The Network Rail worker, was struck by a South Western Railway train near Surbiton, Kingston, London, at around 11.30am today. The 30-year-old employee, from Hampshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.
In reaction to the tragedy, union bosses said they have been warning Network Rail about the 'alarming' number of near-misses and fatalities over the past year. However, they added that it would not be appropriate to speculate about what went wrong in the latest case and called for a 'full and thorough' investigation.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line close to Surbiton railway station at 11.39am this morning (February 9) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death."
