Emma, who quit as head of Knollmead Primary in Surbiton, to travel was attempting a 4,000-mile solo kayak journey.
Her brothers Piers and Giles and sister Natasha paid tribute to her saying: "Emma was an active and determined sister who challenged herself, latterly through her adventures on the Pacific Coast Trail, as well as in the South Pole and Amazon."
Despite writing two days later that she was "in the clear", she was heading through an area notorious for its pirate attacks and drug traffickers.
On September 12, she posted: "Got through town no problem and just took a sigh of relief .... and then....turned corner and found 50 guys in motor boats with arrows!!!"
Amazonian pirate Artur Gomes da Silva has admitted to slitting her throat and throwing her bullet-riddled body into a river, police chief Jose Barradas revealed.
A fifth man, named as Evanilson Gomes da Costa and described as the suspected leader of the gang involved in the Miss Kelty’s murder, died in hospital in Coari on Wednesday morning.
Deputy chief of police Ivo Martins has confirmed: "Emma was hit by two gunshots from a .20 calibre sawn-off shotgun while she was resting in a tent on an island."
