Man sets fire to himself in flats on Brighton Road.
A man in his 30s died in hospital this morning after setting himself on fire at the flats, on the corner of Brighton Road and Balaclava Road at 8.27pm last night.
Firefighters from Surbiton fire station were first on the scene and successfully rescued four other women from a block of flats on the corner of Brighton Road and Balaclava Road.
A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman confirmed four other people had been treated for shock and smoke inhalation and they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the fire.
Update:
It has emerged that the man who died after setting himself alight had beaten his wife and could have been facing jail.
Barmak Karimi, 39, had been banned from coming within half-a-mile of their flat above Yumcha Chinese restaurant unless he was accompanied by a police officer, and ordered to spend every night outside the borough of Kingston.
The Metropolitan Police has launched an internal investigation because police had been called to a disturbance the flat at 6.40pm, just hour-and-a-half before they returned and found him on fire.
While the police investigation is ongoing, a spokesman could not say if Karimi had been at the flat on the first occasion or whether officers had failed to arrest him for breaching his bail conditions.
Comments
Apparently Kingston Magistrates' Court were due to sentence Barmak Karimi for assaulting his wife last week, but failed to do so when the dead man failed to turn up.

Hey dude (the one with numbered comments):
Despite the fact that you did not say Iranian/Iraqi is the same, you inclined to remark that they are because both nations are Muslims. Otherwise why even mention the dead man's nationality when you don't know anything. He is dead, so let him be in peace at least with himself in his new world.
Also, let me tell you what paranoia is: Paranoia is when you cannot confront the truth, which I can see it in your new post now addressed to that Iranian author - what you wrote clearly sounds like 180 degree change.
Last and not least, where your interpretation is that this Iranian author's post means that "an allowance should be made to people who have been abused themselves in the past", then I suggest your read that post again. Where did you see him/her write about any kind of allowances? The author inclines that you should not think of all suicides as religiously motivated - pls read again! It seems to me, that your confusion is not just on nationalities or religions, it is much more deeply rooted than that ...
why did he do it?
It's beyond comprehension.
Myself and others successfully got out...JUST!
I'm sorry but I can say we have no sympathy whatsover with him. He could of killed us all. He's upset all our lives and now we have to get our lives back on track.
That must have been awful, but I am glad to hear that you got out phyisially unscathed.
This story is the main headline in the Surrey Comet this week, and it suggests that the man is question was Iranian/Iraqi and was lodging in the flat with an older couple. He had lived there a couple of months. It further suggests that there is suspicion that this was a 'regliously motivated suicide'.
If this is the case, the couple that he was lodging with are partially responsible here. I am sure that these religious fanatics don't just act normally for their whole lives and suddenly 'switch on' and do something like this. There must have been some build up and the couple should have reported this, rather than putting their neighbours at risk for a few hundred pounds a month.
What that guy did was absolutely shocking! But what I am reading here in the comments is pretty awful too!
First of all I can't see how one can say! Iranian/Iraqi!! If you do not know, you do not speak! At least you won't be considered as an ignorant.
Also, do you think that Muslims or "religious fanatics" or whatever you want to call them are the only ones who beat their wives?? I have no sympathy for this man but what do you know about his life & childhood?
What do you know about what he went through as a kid?? Not that you care but you better try to be informed in order not to say stupid & meaningless things online and sound ridiculous!
Most studies say that those who abuse others have been abused in their childhood and that doesn't have anything to do with your religion.
I agree that sometimes people who are innocent get hurt but this unfortunately seems to happen everyday! You would just need to look a little further than your own nose to see that!
I am Iranian and proud to be one. I have no fanatic belief and am honestly more scared by close-minded people like you (the comment right before mine) than any other Muslim or religious person!
You know, ... internet is not just for this kind of comment or reaction: you can also read and learn! You can learn that Iranian & Iraqi is not the same thing. And you can also learn that Muslim is not the synonym of "Religious fanatics"!
Really: Try it! You might be surprised!
My warmest salute and appreciation for the choice of words to the author (above) who seems to be educated and possess enough knowledge than to jump into his/her own PERSONAL conclusion, and correlating this tragedy to Religious Fanaticism. It is sad to learn that even in THIS day and age of World Wide Web some still choose to remain ignorant by failing to distinguish the differences between a domestic family dispute and religion. The above author couldn't have articulated it any more eloquently, and I would like to quote his/her post:
"Most studies say that those who abuse others have been abused in their childhood and that doesn't have anything to do with your religion". Indeed ….
This is to reiterate that this man beat his wife and the police was on him for THIS crime. Where did they seen his association with religion? Did I miss anything …?! Please enlighten me!
Finally, I too, must add that I have no sympathy for this man, especially when he put others' lives in danger for his insanity. By the same token however, it is only human to remind ourselves that the guy needed professional help and that he should've been arrested on spot. Yet again another failure from the Met Police ….? Who knows … but if only for one second someone in the authority put the 2 and 2 together, to realise that an OSTRACISED and depressed man has nowhere else to go when banned from staying at his own place at nights, then he would most certainly not have ended his life in such traumatic way – 3 weeks + is too long to let a mental person lose. When are we going to learn ….? Haven’t we had enough similar scenarios on mental cases ….?
I hope the difference is now clearer to those who find it easier to correlate all suicides to religion! I wonder how it would feel like if they were to walk into his guy’s shoes for a mile before passing on their comments the way they did .....
Well, I made the comment directly above yours. I'd like to reply to your individual comments.
1. I don't quite understand where I said that Iranian and Iraqi is the 'same thing', or that Muslims are the only ones who beat their wives?! The reason is that I did not say anything of the sort.
2. The fact is that SOME Muslims are religious fanatics and seem pre-disposed to do these things. I firmly believe that MOST Muslims are nothing of the kind, and have several Muslim friends who a certainly not like that.. I actually hate it when I hear this kind of generalisation being made.
3. When sweeping statements are made about everyone of a certain race or religion, it leads to paranoia amongst it's members. I can only assume it is paranoia that has led to your total misinterpretation of my initial comment. Believe me, I would have said exactly the same thing if this guy had been white and lived in Surbiton all his life.
4. The only things that I fundamentally disagree with in your post are the comments about this man's childhood. I feel sorry for anyone who is abused, but this does not give them the right to pass this on to their own wife or children. Are you saying that an allowance should be made to people who have been abused themselves in the past?
