7 St. Marks Hill
Pub with 'sleek, glamorous and decadent interiors' aimed at the ladies.
The Saint Mark's pub (St. Mark's Hill, not surprisingly), has recently transformed itself to appeal to 'ABC1 professionals aged from mid-twenties to mid-forties' according to it's operator The Orchid Group.
Apparently it's Contemporary Drinking brand is a whole new concept with which they hope to attract 'style-conscious, sophisticated customers' where such things as 'distinct zones enable customers to meet their particular visit requirements with ease and the latest in interior and exterior design, with bold and stunning features ensures the overall effect is sophisticated and stylish.'
The new menu includes a range of tapas plates, flatbreads/rustic baguettes, mezze sharer platters, mains, Sunday roasts, sides and desserts.

So, this pub lasted all of two and a half years before being closed for a while and eventually turned into a Pizza Express?
I still don't understand how pub owners can get it so wrong. During the last 18 months, both the Surbiton Flyer and the Duke of York (ex-Elm Tree) have been turned from unappealing (at best) into a couple of the best pubs in Surbiton.
Why couldn't they do the same with this place? It is the same Surbiton, and all of these pubs are within a couple of hundred metres. None of them has got a priviledged position on Maple Road, and if anything the Flyer has got the worst position being right next to the station.
There are some pubs like Corkys and Wetherspoons who deliberately attract the lowest common denominator, and there is room for them in Surbiton as well, but I just don't understand why they couldn't make this one work.
You should give the Grove another chance. The clientele has improved, the food is great and a large selection of wines. Plus it has the only decent outside area in Surbiton.
i'm sorry but most of the pubs in surbiton are filled with students or chavs. up market my ****
The good thing about Surbiton pubs is that there are now some that do not attract any students or chavs at all. I do agree, however, that St Marks Tavern is unlikely ever to be one of them.
I will be interested to see what happens at the newly refurbished Grove on Maple Road.
This has has a much more extensive refit than Saint Marks, and actually has quite a classy feel inside. If they show the football, they are going to attract the same sort of people, so it won't change at all in my opinion.
The Grove is a winner. Nice refit and the BBQ on Sunday went down well. Turning into a nice spot down there with the Gordon Bennett as well. Happy days.
Actually no! Been to the revamped The Grove once.... and never again! The atmosphere was abysmal. Most people were sitting on the outside decking smoking away (when will the law be changed to ban ALL smoking) so had to dine inside. It was like a morgue. Poor service, limited menu, dirty tables.... to be avoided at all cost!!!
I went in here last week. It is easy to see what they are attempting to do, but it does not quite work.
Unfortunately, the previous incarnations of this pub did their level best to seek out and attract the 'lower end customer'. They did very well at this, and these people will not just go somewhere else because of a refit.
Also, 'style-conscious, sophisticated customers' are unlikely to go to a pub where they are showing football all of the time. The drinks are cheap, though!
As above - went in there for a couple of afternoon beers the other Saturday,,,,and yay!! No signs of plasma screens. Then, as if by magic, football commentary started - they have hidden them round the back. Same randoms go in there as previously!
Good grief,one to avoid then.
I shall take my Blackberry elsewhere.
