Why are there so many anon posters on this forum?
do people not really believe in what they are posting that they wish to remain annonymous??

that depends on what you find offensive - bad language or ignorant attitudes
70% of yesterdays foul posts came from REGISTERED users (4 in fact)
So what's your point?
you haven't explained why you continue to allow anonymous posting? The only other forum I know which allows this is 4chan, and that is responsible for 99% of the wrongest stuff on the net...
The main reason we allow anonymous posting is that the site doesn't yet generate enough traffic to justify the obstacle of registration. Over ninety-percent of visitors are non-registered users. Though it could be argued that our anonymous posting policy sways these figures, from experience with other sites we don't believe this to have a significant effect.
Anonymous posting allows visitors to post their comments without obstacle and helps maintain a balance of opinion.
Surbiton.com has no intention of creating an elitist group of members that limits the views expressed to a minority that have registered and logged in. Arguably, even registered users have a high degree of anonymity - it only takes a few minutes to create a new user and there's no compunction for submitting false information.
We admit the recent spike in activity caught us off guard and we weren't as reactive to 'misuse' as we'd normally be, but we still consider blocking opinion (so long as acceptable within our guidelines) by forcing registration, detrimental to the general discussion. As we have said in the past we are reliant on users, both registered and anonymous, to alert us to any antisocial behaviour on the site. It's notable that during the recent events that provoked this discussion, the highest relative proportion of misuse came from registered users.
When we feel site traffic has increased to a sufficient level we will reconsider this policy.

Unfortunately in the past few days the site has suffered from unacceptable behaviour from users, both registered and anonymous.
Typically it seems, and though we have acted within a few hours, things have flared up at time when no one has been available to respond to flagged messages as quickly as normal.
As we mentioned in our User Content Submission Guidelines, retaliating to offensive posts causes more problems for other users on the discussion boards and it's often best not to respond and simply flag the comment to Surbiton.com using the 'Report This' link or via the Feedback Form.
We should also reiterate that Surbiton.com does not monitor, approve, endorse comments posted by users and we are totally reliant on users reporting antisocial behaviour. We have now starting cleaning up the comments, and we're now looking into other methods for managing troublesome user submissions with less reliance on human intervention.

* Retaliating to offensive posts causes more problems for other users on the discussion boards. Just report such messages to us using the Feedback link which is available at the top of every page. We will act on every report we receive."
or will I be accused of being too girlie for pointing this out jwtjlcql???
just standing up for my right to continue to post my views and opinions on this forum seeing as I've not breached the rules despite several attempts at belitteling and provocation made towards me in the last few days and not retaliating and resorting to their level of immature, offensive and inarticulate posts!!

The reason I questioned the anon posters is -
how can the mod regulate their contributions and whether they are 'adhereing' to the alledged 'posting rules' outlined on the site
unless the 'poster' can be identified?
(unless IP addresses are being monitored? )
whether it just be an online user name - I guess making 'users' register is better then not
I find the anon users very confusing. Its as if they want to post inflammatory posts but don't want to be identified so they can't be confronted at another point or another part of the forum. Bit cowardly really.

I think its because its easier not to have to log in.
What does bother me, as you say, is people not being prepared to 'own' a controversial comment.
PS. You can log in anonymously but then why not just put your name on your comment. That way you don't have to bother to log in but you can still own your comment!

Apart from the other benefits for logged-in users (e-mail notification, no ads, etc.), one important advantage is that you're protected from other users masquerading as you and spoofing your name:

Sorry I couldn't resist.
We should also point out that logged-in users continue to remain anonymous. We never reveal e-mail addresses to third-parties without your consent.
You can however allow other user contact you by e-mail via your user page.
