We visit Maya on a regular basis as we love this restaurant, the food is always of a high standard and the restaurant looks the part, the waiters are always very accommodating and best bit of all is the bill always seems very reasonable.
I'd love to comment on the food but service was so bad on Saturday night that we had to leave before the mains arrived! Got there at 8.30, great looking restaurant = sleek and modern and good popadoms and pickles. We waited until 10, asking several times (calmly and politely) for an update. Each time I was told the food was seconds away. In the end we had to leave to relieve our babysitter.
I guess the galling thing, apart fromnot actually getting to eat, was the lack of honest communication. When I told the manager we couldn't wait any longer he was more keen to tell me it was busy than listen to why I thought it was unacceptable to wait over one hour 20 minutes and still see no food.
So looks great fromthe outside = shocking service with a couldn't care attitiude. I can only suggest you don't go there. Matt
This sums the place up perfectly.
The food must be good as they have won awards. If you'e got all night and can cope with their attitude, which hasn't changed in over a year, give them a try!
The food and service still head and shoulders above the rest of Surbitons resaurants, they really look after you. Really tasty food and very generous portions which my partner and I enjoyed very much. Keep it up guys!!!!
We've been there twice but won't bother again although they do provide more variety than their neighbours.
I enjoyed the food and service the first time; my wife had slight reservations.
The second time, the service was appalling with no aplogies for interminable delays to all orders and the bill. The food was still OK but less impressive.
Our neighbours ordered a takeaway, had to phone them back twice and eventually go to pick it up after 2 hours! Rather than apologise, the manager just said they were very busy. At this rate, they won't be busy for long!
We'll stick to The Red Rose and Joy in future simply because their attitude and service are far better in both.
Having recently moved into Surbiton, Maya caught my sight at first glance with its contemporary sheek interior and elegant looks. It certainly is not your ordinary curry house, and with all this said, I still regret to have taken my family there to eat. The food was average, nothing special, but the service on the night was appalling even though it wasn’t that busy on the Wednesday evening we went. I felt as though the staff spent most there time focusing on what was happening at the other curry house across the street instead of being attentive to our needs. Although the staff were not rude, they were neither entirely friendly. Maybe it was a bad first experience or just not meeting my high expectations, but I certainly will keep my options open and try out the other Indian cuisines within the area before I make my return here again......Maybe I shall try the place across the street next time, who knows? But I will not be returning here anytime soon, just hope the others are not like this place.
The place across the street is the Red Rose, and is still the busiest in the area despite the relatively recent openings of Maya and Joy.
It is totally the opposite of Maya - very old fashioned and scruffy inside, but the service is normally excellent.
The food is excellent, but a bit different from Maya. The Red Rose has a much more traditional menu, with not many of the specials that they have in Maya.
I really like both of these restaurants, but one may suit you better than the other.
Just moved to the area and was looking to find a great Indain restaurant and looks like we've found it. Maya in Surbiton is just as good as any top Indian restaurant I have tried in the city. A great find, can't wait to go back.
I've eaten at maya a fair few times now and have to say each time it keeps getting better and better! Dined there last night with the wife and kids and have to say that despite being very very busy we were seated and looked after very well! Food was great, service was impeccable and the atmosphere was buzzy!
This place is certainly offering a much superior standard than anything else in the area...and comes higly reccomended from all of us!
Tried Maya restaurant for the first time last Saturday and really enjoyed ourselves. A really fantastic atmosphere, very slick decor, highly recommended.
I would just like to thank Shamim Malek and the brilliant staff at Maya restauarant for a magical evening as usual. But this evening was different as I proposed to my girlfriend and she said 'YES'. A bottle of complimentary champagne was sent over from the management to celebrate our memorable occasion. Thanks guys for making our evening so special. Brilliant as always!!!!!
I visited Maya restaurant in Surbiton a few Saturdays ago and thought the food and service was extremely good. I've been there a few times and have always enjoyed my evening and this time wasn't any different from my previous experience, highly recommend it.
My family and I visited Maya on Saturday on the back of reading the great reviews about the place but were utterly disgraced by the rudeness of the staff and manager in the pink shirt and tie. The service was the worst id ever experienced! Food was good except the butter chicken which tasted as they'd thrown in a bucket of sugar. All I wanted to do was get out of the place as the rudeness was just making me fume. As leaving the restaurant, I mentioned it to the guy in the pink shirt (who may have been the manager) but he didn’t even have the manners to look at me when I spoke to him as he just carried on speaking to his staff and continuing with till receipts. There was no apology for anything. Will NEVER go there again!!!!!
P.S. We also over heard him (the guy in the pink shirt) asking the couple next to us, who where still having their coffee, to hurry up and leave as there were people waiting to be seated – how rude!
That sounds awful! I'm shocked as I have only ever had good experiences there but haven't been for several months. I'm going to go tonight and see what's going on. I'll look out for the pink shirt!
I have been to Maya about 5 times and on every occasion it has been fantastic. Very quick to get your popadoms and a beer and tasty food thereafter! The service has always been great.
I totally agree with the previous comment and had a very similar experience myself. I visited Maya restaurant last night with my family and was utterly disappointed. The service was poor, there was no apology for the lengthy wait to be served and any complaints that we did make did not seem to be listened to. I certainly will not be returning.
Having previously eaten at Maya a couple of times as a couple I thought it would be an ideal venue for a group night out... How wrong I was, booked a table for 6 people at 8pm last night Saturday - restaurant was very busy,, which is usually a good thing, however we were waiting for 40 minutes to sit down, it appeared that people in smaller groups who had not booked were given tables, not a problem, but no one even came over and asked if a) we would like to order some drinks while we were waiting or b) apologised for the wait, it seemed the owner/manager only apologised if directly asked a question. We were finally seated and given menus, however despite sitting down 40 minutes late, we eventually had to flag down a passing waiter to ask if we could have at drink at about 9pm one hour after the time of our original booking. We then waited a long time for someone to come and take our order, eventually receiving our main course at 11.00 pm, which apart from the sizzling dishes was cold. It appears to me that greed for takings has become the priority here, with Maya packing in as many people as possible, I could only see 4 waiters, and if we had been told sorry we are short staffed or any kind of sorry for that matter, then I would not have minded. Needless to say they have lost local custom, the food when it arrived was mostly good, apart from the items that were cold, but the service last night was appalling.
We were there last Saturday, and had a similar experience. We were a group of five, and whilst we did not have to wait long to get a table, the service was very slow after that.
I have been to this place at least ten times previously, and the service has always been good or ok, so I hope it is not going downhill.
Visited Maya last week with the wife for a quick meal and ended up staying for the whole evening. We really enjoyed speaking with Shamim Malek the owner who made our evening a complete dining experience, great food, great service, great atmosphere, a great restaurant, highly recommend it !
I recently visited Maya with a few friends and have to say that this restaurant is fantastic. Prompt service and lovely tasting food combined with a beautifully decorated restauarant, also very reasonably priced, very impressed, will be returning with my girl friend very soon.
The ingredients used throughout my takeaway were incredibly fresh and delicious, vastly superior than the bog standard and uniform food to be found in many other Indian Cuisine restaurants.
I went to Maya for the first time last night in celebration of my birthday. It was only me and my girlfriend however.
I can't say that my experience was exceptional in anyway whatsoever with consideration to the food, ambience and service. The few things that did catch my eye were generally negative (as they often are) however it was also a case of personal taste.
I found the service to be unconfident and dithery. The waiter poured my wine then poured my girlfriend's, he placed the bottle down. He then believed he hadn't poured me enough wine so he picked the bottle up again (reaching across me) and poured more......odd.
Two chaps brought the meal out on the stand, one object was a garlic nan. While serving, one of them stated it was a plain nan, the other guy freaked out that it was actually a garlic nan. The first chap apologised profusely which I didn't feel was appropriate as I didn't care either way, I could see what it was.
The music was madness as if they'd stolen the MP3 player of a schizophrenic, flipping from classical music, to trance, to soft rock and pop. I would've preffered a little indian flavour in between my ears aswell as my lips (or at least some consistency).
I didn't feel the food was anything special, but it was pleasent enough. I had the Lamb Chilli Achari and felt it to be a little standard.
This is just my opinion based on one trip there but with a good range of established indian choice, I doubt I'll be going back.
Thanks for the tip about the music,I was thinking of popping in with the memsahib but Sitar music played quietly is the only acceptable background whilst dining Indian style.
I tried Maya last month and cannot wait to try it again. The staff were exceptionally professional and friendly. My friend had been speaking to the manager before I arrived, and he continued to be attentive throughout the evening. When our food arrived, he came over and confirmed what we had ordered. The staff were not too pushy, they werent constantly checking on you, but they were attentive non the less. Beautiful ambient atmosphere and decoration. A lot of effort has obviously been put into this place. Food was fresh and delicious. If you like it hot try the Chilli Achari(vegetarian) full of whole little green chillies.
Top marks.
Tried Maya last night and very glad I did. Restaurant was busy all night (considering it was a Monday night). Very buzzy atmosphere with food that was of superior standards! Definately leaps and bounds above the others in the area! Glad to see good businesses opening up in these hard times!
Yes would definately agree with the fact that MAYA is the best of the 3 other Indian restaurants in the area! It has now definately become my 1st choice of the restaurants in the area. Its great to see that this Indian restaurant breaks the mould of medioca decor, and medioca food and service. Maya passed all the tests - Amazing quality food; Abo[filtered word]ely beautiful decor; Great and friendly service; and above all at this time - your not even paying a penny extra for the food in relation to the other Indian restaurants!! I was pleasantly surprised! I had thought that owing to the above named attributes the restaurant boasts that I would have to pay a few bob extra - But this was not the case at all!! :)
I was sceptical at first when Maya was to be opened with 3 others so close by - but now Im glad its here - there are clearly enough customers and the demand is there!
Move over Red Rose and Joy!
Will be going again very soon! Would recommend to all for a guaranteed brilliant night out! I may have to add that since the restaurant is so busy at its peak hours, I had to wait a little while understandably as the chef is cooking all the food fresh from scratch, but boy was it worth the wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One last thing - I thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the owner, Sam, who topped off our Maya experience with the icing on the cake! Am elated this wonderful restaurant has opened up so locally - I have no need to travel into the City anymore!
They obviously know what they are doing.....the restaurant has lovely decor (very chic, with a london type feel to it) , great food and very pleasant and prompt service. Impressed! The other Indian restaurants in the area really do have some serious competition here!

Really enjoyed a great night at Surbiton's finest Indian restaurant Maya, this place has it all, great food, service and a very chic design!!!
Great place which offererd great food and service, what more could you want?
Enjoyed a really great night at Maya, the food and service was top class.
Would recommend, good food and service and a lovely restuaraurant, one of the better ones.

The food was mediocre. If you want traditional, go to the Red Rose. If you want modern go to Joy. Maya is neither.
