Community gathers to ensure Christmas switch-on happens after all.

Earlier this month the Surrey Comet reported how the council withdrew funding for lights and a celebration in Victoria Road, Surbiton, because of the economic downturn.

But Councillor Yogan Yoganathan said enough disappointed shopkeepers had offered their assistance to allow a small event between 3pm and 6pm on Monday, November 24, although Victoria Road will still be without lights.

The community will help switch on the Christmas tree lights for the first time and the borough's brass band will play with Barisons wind band. Surbiton Rotary Club will be there with their sleigh and the switch-on will happen at 5.10pm, outside the station.

A meeting about working towards the big society, with all welcome to attend, will be held at the Surbiton Flyer at 6pm.

I think it is really disapointing that the government has decided not to fund the lights. Christmas light switch ons bring the community together, which is a rare occurance these days. Surbiton is supposed to be an idealic suburban town, the only thing it is missing is a close community and now Christmas lights.

There is no money,Labour squandered it all and what was left was squandered by RBK on the Rose.

So I suppose some Blackpool illumination-style tableaux are out of the question? Shame. Instead, perhaps we can recrute 80 volunteers to line the high street holding torches every night until Christmas. Actually, that'd look a bit creepy... be a bit like walking into the Death Star every time you wanted to do a bit of shopping.

****Surrey Comet mis-print - it's happening on WEDNESDAY 24th apparently.****

Yes, quite agree - much better to have just the tree rather than a half-hearted attempt at decorating the whole town. Waitrose have always sponsored the central tree display since it was first conceived and erected by a former councillor some 10 years ago.

Thanks for the heads up. We've updated the date in our calendar.

hi are they being switched on monday or tuesday please because it says monday 22 at the top of advert

Shame on the council for not funding some decorations but thank goodness Waitrose will still be sponsoring the best Christmas tree display in the borough otherwise there would be nothing for Santa to switch on in Surbiton.

I think a lit Christmas tree is all that is required, most inexpensive "lights" just draped across high streets look so tatty and any more street furniture will simply mean more oldies falling over and breaking hips.

It is typical of Waitrose to make such a welcome and simple contribution.

Who needs the council when we can rely on good old Burger Box to light up the town.
