After 87 years on top of Richmond Hill, the iconic Royal Star and Garter home is moving.
Last week the charity - who care for ex-servicemen and their families - announced that residents from Richmond Hill would be moving to a new home in Langley Avenue, Surbiton in 2013.
The charity have said that the building, which was built in 1924 to treat wounded soldiers back from the battlegrounds of the First World War, can no longer cater to the needs of its 60 residents, and that a move is necessary.
Sue Harley, from the charity, said: "It's really because the building is no longer suitable for the intensive nursing care our current residents need.
"The building was built in 1924 and the average age of the soldiers was about 22. Although they were in wheelchairs they were quite mobile.
"The average age of our residents is now 84, and they do need more care.
"They don't have en suite facilities, there isn't a lot of space for us to do any work on the building and we can't look after people with dementia. Sadly the building is no longer fit for purpose."
