A 103-year-old woman has celebrated her birthday at the Royal Star and Garter home in Surbiton.
Violet, known as Vi, enjoyed the music, cake and giant balloons, and received a personal message from Forces Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn.
After growing up in Putney, Vi met William, known to her as Ben, at a dance, and married him in 1938. They had two children together, Colin and Bruce, before Ben served in the Army, being involved in the D-Day landings in 1944. His body was discovered two weeks later, on June 19, and he was buried at Tilly-sur-Seulles.
Vi then went on to work several jobs to support her children, and the Surbiton Marks and Spencer store keeps in touch with her to this day.
The Royal Star and Garter Homes charity was founded in 1916, and cares for disabled veterans and their spouses.
