Ewell Road Killer

Ewell Road at night

Borough's worst black spot named.

An enquiry made to TfL about collisions in the borough named the Surbiton road as one of the nine locations which meet the Department for Transport criteria for installing a speed camera.

A spokeswoman for the London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP) said, 'When identifying locations where speed cameras could be of benefit, LSCP does not rely on simply the number of KSIs that occur at any location, but use this criteria to highlight locations where speed cameras could provide the greatest benefit.'

Traffic accidents on the A240 (Ewell Road) have in the past three years caused ten serious injuries including one fatality and 22 other reported collision injuries.

I see from the Surrey Comet that sadly, a chap has died of his injuries after being hit by a motorcycle on the Ewell Road near to the Mad Hatter pub on 17th November. Wonder whether anything will be done this time to prevent further deaths and injuries?

Nothing will be done, the road has become an obstacle course of bus lanes and necks along with parked vehicles.

The only way would be to allow the free flow of traffic by making it a red route from Kingston to Tolworth and that will not happen.Tfl and RBK encourage traffic congestion as it ticks the box trying to eliminate traffic and thus have zero accidents.

The current situation merely pushes even more traffic onto the King Charles Road which staggeringly has yet again had a change of priority at it junction with Surbiton Hill Park, allowing priority once again for KCR traffic heading for the iron bridge.

Total costs now for two changes are in excess of £100,000....bizarre.

I find your response a little odd Poppy. This man who died was hit by a moving motorcycle and you say the solution to the road safety problem is to "allow the free flow of traffic".

It seems to me that some traffic flows a little too freely, or else this wouldn't have happened. I refuse to refer to this incident as an accident. I really hope that one day there will be zero casualties on the roads of this borough. It's not an unreasonable thing to want. You shouldn't blame the council for traffic congestion - look a bit closer to home. I do not believe your figure of ' inexcess of £100,000' for two changes to priority at that junction. You haven't got any evidence of that so it must have been imagined.

Do not know the precise facts but it is very likely that the unfortunate pedestrians vision was obscured by the very poor line of sight along nearly all the road.

£100k based on known costs of laying short bus lanes and ludicrous speed humps, probably an underestimate if anything.

First:
"The current situation merely pushes even more traffic onto the King Charles Road which staggeringly has yet again had a change of priority at it junction with Surbiton Hill Park, allowing priority once again for KCR traffic heading for the iron bridge. Then:
" £100k based on known costs of laying short bus lanes and ludicrous speed humps, probably an underestimate if anything."

Now hang on Poppy, there aren't any bus lanes on King Charles Road, so should I decipher that what you're actually saying is that £100,000 was been spent on is the Ewell Road and not King Charles Road? Or do you mean Ewell Road and King Charles Road. Or do you mean the 2 changes at the junction of King Charles Road and Surbiton Hill Park?

Surbiton is quite dangerous area

Not surprised,I used to live in Surbiton and used the Ewell road almost daily and since the road has become so cluttered with endless traffic lights, pointless bus lanes which simply exist to frustrate all road users and the absurd parking on the Broadway,it will only get more dangerous.

When will planners realise that for good road safety there must be good visibilty of the road ahead and as few distractions as possible.
Perhaps the police could nab all the mobile phone users who drive along chatting away oblivious to what is going on around them?

That may halt the carnage but Speed Cameras will simply add to the street furniture causing even greater problems,it will however raise a lot in revenue if anyone is able to drive at more than a snails pace between 0700 and 2300.

I would like to the see the post camera statistics, seeing as cameras do not prevent accidents.
