While the Surbiton Food Festival has ensured that most are now aware of the town’s awesome capacity for food, fun, and festivity, many still fail to appreciate the incredible level of sporting prowess found among the townspeople.

Sports events are complemented by brilliant stalls, entertainment, and bar, while the Fun Dog Show presents canines the opportunity to enter the spirit of friendly competition.

Kingston Police officers and teams from the British Transport Police (BTP) were called to Victoria Recreation Ground in Balaclava Road at about 1.30pm today. A BTP spokesman said officers were examining the scene and are treating the death as unexplained.

Work is underway to formally identify the man and inform his family. A police cordon remains in place.

A friend has paid tribute to Malcolm McKinlay, who police believe was found dead in Surbiton.

‘Gentle and kind’ Mr McKinlay was a member of the Surbiton Club and worked as a bar steward there, bringing many years of experience with him. Friend Bob Tyler paid tribute to Mr McKinlay, who had been missing from his home for two days last week.

Mr McKinlay, 61, from Surbiton, was last seen at his home at 9.45am on Wednesday, September 24. Police were called to reports of a man collapsed in Victoria Park in Balaclava Road, Surbiton, at 10.45am on Friday.

Racing sardines and a tug of war between ancient ‘clans’ saw off the finale of the Surbiton Food Festival.

Hundreds of families and friends were treated to a sunny afternoon playing school sports day races while raising funds for charity.

Dust off your pumps and pack a picnic as we ‘tip our hats’ to the Olympics and enjoy the traditional Seething sports and races such as the Egg and Spoon, Sack, King’s Soup and many, many more.

Dust off your plimsolls, put on your PE kit, pack a picnic and come along for all the fun, frolics and simplicity of a traditional primary school sports day – but this time for the whole community.

Kingston Council recently carried out extensive works to Victoria Recreation Ground, locking the Effingham Road gate for around 18 months and causing considerable inconvenience. A fence was erected around half of the park, and turfing carried out across the middle where people used to walk, presumably so local residents couldn't use the park to its full extent, for no apparent reason. Within a few weeks the fence was being kicked down and residents were again walking across the park on their way to Surbiton.
