18 years on, Balaclava Road finally gets pedestrian crossing

After a residents' campaign that started in the eighties, the council has finally given in.

The busy road that now feeds the St. James' estate has been a danger to pedestrians using Victoria Rec. for decades.

Councillor Yogan Yoganathan enthused that it was an 'incredible result' for the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee's campaign.

Southampton Hotel/1961-1977

Does anyone remember any of the regulars at The Southampton: Bill Owen, Bill & Cherrie Watts, Noel Pope, Sir John Boyd-Carpenter MP and what happened to the original Roland Emett cartoons along the entire west wall?

Faulty Towers/Berrylands

Hi I am a new member and note one of the earlier topics. "Ian Carmichael lived in Berrylands and was in Faulty Towers". I think the writer was confusing him with Allan Cuthbertson who certainly did live in Berrylands and was often seen walking to the station on his way to filming, he was Colonel Hall in Faulty Towers and indeed most often played army officer roles in many TV and Film parts.

Primary Schools in Surbiton

Hi all,

I'm thinking of moving to Surbiton and would like to know what you all think about the primary school provision in the area. My daughter is only 1 year old but I need to think ahead :D

So I'd like to know which are the good schools? What are they like and how hard/easy is it to get into them?

Thanks in advance for your comments

Leeway for Raeburn Avenue phone mast?

An 800-strong petition raised by Berrylands residents has been accepted by Orange telecoms group.

Orange representatives were said to be very helpful when they met with residents at the offices of local MP Edward Davey.

Residents were angered by the minimal consultation the council gave when the decision to site the mast was approved.

Though there is no scientific evidence that the masts are harmful, local tradesman Sam Saber said, 'I object to the mast on health grounds because there is no scientific evidence that masts are not harmful.'

Arsonists put end to Rising Sun

A second arson attack on the disused public house may finally condemn the pub to demolition.

August 2004, 25 firefighters fought to quell a deliberate fire that gutted the 200 year-old site. Now another attack has seriously damaged the structure, most likely putting end to any plans for it to reopen.

Once again it was discovered that the basement was to source of the blaze, after six fire engines were called in on the afternoon of Monday 14 February.

Property developers Exedra Architects who own the plot, hoped to use the land for residential development but their application was refused last November.

New & used armed robbery

Have you noticed the ad scripting at the top of this website that automatically picks up words & phrases from a page being viewed and tries to link to advertiser sites - e.g. eBay.

Made me laugh when I was looking at the armed robbery story only to see a link to eBay at the top which read:

"Discount Armed Robbery. New & used Armed Robbery.Check out the huge selection now!"

LOL!
