Fun and games in Berrylands

In a run-up to The Surbiton Trophy tennis championship, The Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club is organising the Berrylands Community Week.

Berrylands Community Week starts 27th May to 4th June. Including a fun run, quiz night, tennis, music and other activities, a full program of event can be found on their website.

George Best sports shiner in The Vic

The black-eyed football legend seeks alcoholic solace after bust up with Surbiton sweetheart.

Celebrity footballer George Best has hit the papers yet again after a violent argument with his current partner, Surbiton resident Ros Hollidge. Spotted frequenting The Victoria public house in Victoria Road, the ex-Manchester United player was said to have returned after drinking binge, reported he'd 'Smashed the house up' and gained a black-eye in the process.

Best is said have inflicted near-irreversible damage to his new liver, which was transplanted in 2002.

Edward Davy holds Kingston and Surbiton

The Liberal Democrat party held it's seat with 51% of votes.

They won with a majority of 8,966, though there was a 7% swing to the Conservatives compared to the 2001 election. Labour gained 4.4%.

Surbiton banker jailed for peeping up skirts

Andrew James pleaded guilty after being caught by plain clothes police.

Over seven years, the 36 year-old had accumulated a library of over 10,000 images which he sold over the internet. He has been jailed 18 months.

The UK's first Centre for Suburban Studies says suburbs have to overcome that perception.

Surbiton Station wins Award

London Transport have named Surbiton Station 'Rail Station of The Year'.

The award was presented to Kingston Council at a dinner attended by over 600 people last Wednesday. Other finalists included the London Borough of Bromley and Chiltern Railways.

Surbiton received special attention for it's recent improvements for cyclist and pedestrian.

Dr Wolfson found guilty by General Medical Council

The Surbiton doctor who feared being struck off, has been cautioned after being found guilty of serious medical misconduct by the GMC.

After two years waiting for the hearing, Doctor Martin Wolfson who practices at the Claremont Medical Centre has finally put to rest his fears of being stuck off the medical register.

In 2003 the doctor hit a child while examining her at a clinic in Walton. The doctor admitted hitting her, but said he acted on impulse after the three-year-old child had kicked him in the groin.

The parents of Lahna Fahmi are said to be continuing with their plan to sue, claiming the child was traumatised and suffered a fever due to the doctors action.

Residents accuse students of car vandalism

Clayhill resident students are incriminated for scores of damaged cars in Burney Avenue.

Police say there's no evidence to say they're responsible, but local residents have blamed the students after over 20 cars were vandalised over the weekend. There have been 'ongoing tensions' between locals and Kingston University's hall of residence students.

18 years on, Balaclava Road finally gets pedestrian crossing

After a residents' campaign that started in the eighties, the council has finally given in.

The busy road that now feeds the St. James' estate has been a danger to pedestrians using Victoria Rec. for decades.

Councillor Yogan Yoganathan enthused that it was an 'incredible result' for the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee's campaign.

Schoolboy mugged for a tenner

A mob of twenty teenagers beat up the boy near Alexandra Park in Berrylands.

The 15-year-old was walking in the park with two friends when the mob demanded money from him. After he refused them the gang knocked him to the ground and proceeded to surround and attack him.

Before leaving him, ten pounds were stolen from him. The boy lost a tooth and was taken to Kingston Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Kingston CID are taking calls regarding the offence on 020 8541 1212.
