Idle chit chat about Surbiton

"Surbiton Past" by Richard Statham

Last Xmas my girlfriend bought me a most amazing and little-known book entitled "Surbiton Past" penned by a longtime resident of ours.
It's a fascinating, and extremely well researched 126 pgs of pure historical fact.

How "Surbiton" was first mentioned in the doomsday book, how "Surbiton" came from a saxon word - SurBelton (Sothern Watchtower) as opposed to Norbiton/Norbelton, or something like, and is of course up for conjecture.

Berrylands Quiz

I have heard a scurrilous rumour that a recent big win at the Berrylands Quiz night (£900+) was a scam set up by various people connected with the pub. Surely this cannot be true?!!

My Journey Home

I moved to Surbiton 6 years ago, almost to the day, and by and large have enjoyed living here. I work in Central London and regularly travel back to Surbiton in the evening and late at night.

Now, is it just me, or is it getting worse, last night i arrived back at the station at about 10.30pm, my journey home was more like Soho on a Friday night than Surbiton on a Tuesday night, it went like this:

What's the development on Barge Walk opposite Portsmouth Road on the river walk into Kingston?

There was a large boarded up area next to some unfortunate houses on the west side of the river for a long time. And now something seems to be rising up out of it. Does anybody know what it is?

I would be sad if this view ends up ruined by more houses.

Squash Partner

Hi,

I need a squash partner. I have played on and off a bit since school but I'd love to get back into it more to be honest. It's been a while since school...

Anyone interested?

Andy,

Surbiton.

New restaurant in Tolworth - Viana

Has anyone been to the new restaurant that's opened recently next to HSBC bank.
It claimes to be an English & Continental restaurant, boasts opening times to 01:30 Fri/Sat night and a set menu for £10 daytimes. A table of 4 gets a free bottle of wine. Looks good and with simple tasteful decor could be a winner - yet I've never seen anyone in there!

Have you? Or anyone you know?

Avenu Estate Agents, 5 Brighton Road. Where are they ?

What has happened to Avenu Estate Agents at 5 Brighton Road (near bridge)? One minute they were there and the next they were gone. The guy who had taken it over from AP Homes a year or so ago, seemed to work very hard so I am quite surprised.

living off victoria rd?

i am thinking of moving to surbiton and the area has seemed fine when i've been there. i'd like to be close to station and off one of the streets near victoria rd i.e. maybe st andrews/philps/james etc...

however i read some comments about ymca and notice these streets back onto the back of victoria rd commercial buildings.

does anyone know if this area would be ok to live i.e. safe etc?

Somewhat hopeful request for witnesses to car accident on Maple Road

Hi folks

I suspect this will come to nothing but it's worth a go. At some point yesterday (12th October) my parked car (Mazda MX5) has been hit by another vehicle outside the Black Lion on Maple Road.

A "note" was left on the windscreen but was totally blank which I suspect was intended to throw off any other witnesses into believing that contact details had been left.

A friend suspects it may have been a White Tow truck that was collecting a broken down car at around 7 or half 7 last night as the angles looked very tight to her but she didn't remember the name of the tow company.
