Idle chit chat about Surbiton

The latest addition to Surbiton...

...is another betting shop.

There seems to have been a lot of grumbling on here about whether or not Pizza Express is a good thing or not, meanwhile Coral have pulled off a masterstroke.

Some might assume that Surbiton is already very well-served for betting shops, and that there was no need for another one only two doors down from William Hill, but Coral have been very clever as their target clientele are bound to use their shop as it is 10 metres closer to the Coronation Hall.

OMG - Do we REALLY want ANOTHER chain restaurant opening in Surbiton?

OMG - Do we REALLY want ANOTHER chain restaurant opening in Surbiton?

Wandered across the road from the Coronation today, attracted by a new notice on the long-drawn-down shutters of St. Mark's Tavern. NO, No, no! Surely not? PIZZA EXPRESS! Along with a drinks License till 00:00, closing at 00:30.

I fear this will be the final straw in Surbiton loosing it's uniqueness, and adopting the same predicatable, drab, globalisated nature of most Surrey town's/village's highstreets.

Local Surbiton History

Is there a Local Hisotry club or society for Surbiton? I am researching for a friend, and would like to find if a certain house on Catherine Road is still there, or if it has been demolished for the 'new' flats. Any advice gratefully received!

Residents and Business Parking Permits set to rise... dramatically!

I understand that Kingston Council are to increase the charges for residents and business permits.
Residents from £60 per year to £90
Business from £90 per year to £300

What are your thoughts on this?

Sewage plant smell

I've noticed over the last couple of days that the smell from the sewage farm, located down Lower Marsh Lane, has been pretty pungent. Anyone else noticed this? Personally I think it's the strongest it has been since I moved to the area some 13 years ago.
I thought that measures had been taken to reduce the stench.

Olympic Cycle Course

Jolly exciting stuff, the Olympics course will largely follow routes that will be very familiar to cycle commuters and enthusiasts from the Surbiton and wider Kingston-upon-Thames/Elmbridge area.

TOLWORTH TOBY JUG

Anyone any memories of this pub demolished in the early 00s.

Had BIG claims to fame. Bowie (Ziggy era), Zep, Free, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac & others played there.

Fred - dad of John - Lennon also worked as a barman for a while

Coronation Hall - My retreat from all the (few remaining) pubs of this world

Well, I have finally come to the unsurprising conclusion that I can no longer afford to visit pubs with the intention of drinking beer and grabbing a bite to eat.

Auction House near Surbiton ?

Where is the nearest auction house (antiques not property) to Surbiton? There used to be one in Kingston but it closed down years ago.
