Mad Hatters

A new pub has opened up to the Ewell Road called Mad Hatters. It was formerly a pub but has laid derelict for a couple a years.

I guess it's good to see an old building done and provide a bit a life and trade from that end of town. But it's a bit too much of a theme pub for my liking. I bet they'll change it within a couple of years

Steam Trains in Surbiton

Every wednesday night until November a steam train will be passing through Surbiton.

This is the Cathedrals Express which runs every Wednesday til November from Victoria to Canterbury. In the evening it returns to base on the Mid-Hants Railway at Alton, passing through Surbiton at 10.15 approx.

Seeing a steam train at this speed is very impressive for a person who wasn't around to see them 1st time around.

Hi All

Amazing that another 12 peole are interested in chatting about Surbiton.

I'm new to the list so just wanted to say Hi.

I've been living in Melbourne Australia for the last 17 years but I was born and raised in sunny Surbiton. I do get to go home (yep still call it home) every 5 years or so. Everytime I come back something changes - looks like I've got waitrose to look forward to on my next visit.

My parents live in Ewell Road (Tolworth end) and they are thinking of moving so I had a a bit of a surf to look at real estate prices. Oh my gawd how does anyone afford to live in Surbiton anymore !!!!! I think my parents place is now worth 10 times what they paid for it 20 years ago.

Choices Choices Choices!

Hi All,

I am considering joining one of those ?health club? type places in Surbiton and wondered if anyone here had any experience of them.

As far as I can see there are two main ones ? The Globe _ which is a YMCA, very plush, not too frightening with muscle bound blokes waiting to laugh as I make a twit of myself on those ?go nowhere bikes? and the other one on Portsmouth road ? I think it?s called Charters or Chapters _ again very plush and quite friendly but Very Very Expensive.

Charters / Chapters has a pool where as the Globe does not, although I?m not sure that justifies the expense.

Merry Christmas

Hi All,

You?re a quiet lot, but Merry Christmas all the same.

I moved into my flat in Portsmouth Road last week and so feel much more at place posting here.

Hope we are in for a busy 2000 (list wise that is).

All the best.

Tim

Hello everyone

It feels like I signed up to this list an age ago. It's great that it has now woken up. I think the fact there is a discussion list about Surbiton, shows how much it has probably changed Denise!

When I first moved to Surbiton from Plymouth five years ago I lived in St. Andrews' Square and then lived on the Upper Brighton rd for a while. I now live in Long Ditton.

I moved to the area because I got a job in Esher. I was due to move into the Kingston YMCA for a short while, whilst I found accomodation. I have to admit that I was rather disconcerted when I discoved that the *Kingston* YMCA is not in Kingston at all, but in Surbiton. As I had spent the previous month or so telling all my friends that I was moving to Kingston. (But as the rail link to Esher is better, it worked out for the best). I'm ashamed to admit my (totally unfounded) pre-conceptions included: Terry & June, The Good Life, Twin Sets.
