Idle chit chat about Surbiton

Another Surbiton suicide

A man has been killed by setting fire to himself on Brighton Road last night. Did anyone see this?

This is the second suicide in Surbiton within a month (after the train incident). I feel very sorry for this guy as I cannot imagine what he must have been suffering from to kill himself in this manner.

Living in Surbiton

Hello, I am thinking of moving to Surbiton with my family and have seen a house in Victoria Avenue. I have seen some negative comments on this site regarding this street and was hoping for an up to date opinion as with young children would like to feel safe! Many thanks for your time.

TV Reception

Any one else living in Surbiton having trouble with their Digital TV reception since the bad weather yesterday? Doesn't look like a problem with my aerial so thought I'd see if it was a common problem.

New Subway branch in Surbiton

I saw some prediction about a Subway opening in Surbiton some time ago.

It now appears that they are moving into the shop on Claremont Road recently vacated by Oriental Cuisine.

I am hoping it won't be open too late at night, as it could add to the increasing problems with chavs congregating in that area as they visit Village Pizza and Corky's.

Why are Kingston Council and greedy developers STILL determined to ruin Surbiton?

I noticed a few weeks ago that three large 1920s houses on Maple Road had been sold for 'development'. There was no movement for a while, so I assumed that the developer had thought better of the original plan to build 21 flats on the site given the current economic downturn.

Over the weekend, I noticed that they had started to remove the roof tiles from the houses.

Warning: infiltration of Maple Road

I was walking down Maple Road tonight when I was approached by a well dressed, middle aged man.

I thought he was going to ask for directions, but as soon as he spoke I knew his game - 'Have you got a jack?' he asked. I was on foot, walking home with an Indian takeaway, so it was hardly likely.

When I said I did not have one, he said that his car had broken down there (pointed to The Mall) and asked for 90p to get the bus.

Comment list sort order

Recently we've had a few requests to help make the comments easier to navigate. So as an experiment we've decided to reverse the ordering of comments, meaning that the newest comments will now appear at the top. This has the added benefit that e-mail notifications will now open the web page at the correct position.

For those who preferred the old ordering (or those who like to tinker), we've added some new options at the bottom of the comments that allows you to configure them to your own preference.
