Idle chit chat about Surbiton

Transport question

This website and forum is great. A lot of information about Surbiton has helped me make up my mind that I'm going to take the plunge and move out of Central London (which, while convenient, is dirty and noisy) and move to Surbiton.

I have a relatively noddy question about travelling to/from central London.

I understand that there are three kinds of trains from Surbiton to Waterloo - fast, semi-fast and slow.

Given that the fast train is one of the best zone 6 - zone 1 connections, I imagine it's one of the reasons Surbiton is so popular. So here's my question:

Good tenant /for Landlords

Hello

New to the site so apologies if this is in the wrong area (I don't think it is exactly a classified ad). I am currently working in Argentina and am moving back to England and specifically to Surbiton. I lived in Surbiton in 1996-2000 I think it was. I was hoping to get in contact directly with any potential landlords, rather than estate agents, with a view to renting a property.

Can anyone recommend a good local re-upholstery firm please?

Saigon Chef - Tolworth

Hello,

Has anyone yet tried the (new) Saigon Chef since it has re-invented itself from a Vietnamese retaurant?

I used to love some of their spicey (Vietnamese consume more chillies than any other country in the world) dishes. The nourishing and very hot Sunday afternoon noodle soup was just the ticket for recovering from the night before.

Since re-opening it is now advertising itself as an "Authentic Chinese & Indian Cuisine".

Does it compare favourably with the "old" Saigon cheff? Anyone?

Largewood Avenue and Red Lion Road

Hi

I'm hoping to move to Surbiton/Tolworth soon. Initially I was looking at central Surbiton but have realised that's out of my budget, so looks like it will be Tolworth.

Can anyone give me an idea of what Tolworth is like, especially Largewood Avenue and Red Lion Road? Are there any roads in Tolworth that you'd recommend, or that should be avoided if possible?

I'd be very grateful for any feedback - thanks.

The ever-changing face of Surbiton

I note with a certain degree of bewilderment that 'Southern Brew' is now boarded up. I also note that the charity shop that morphed out of C'Est Bon has now been gutted. What will this morph into (does anyone know)? Will it be another **hair dresser/charity shop/estate agents/coffee shop. Could this be the break we need for a traditional (non-chain) Spanish restaurant?

Surbiton Post Office

Why oh why is Surbiton Post Office so smelly and scruffy? It's bad enough having to go into the cramped newsagents at all, never mind walking to the back area that consists of the Post Office where there is invariably a queue of at least eight people and it is so stuffy as well. The whole place smells like a farmyard. The post office carpet must have been there for around 40 years, it is filthy and needs a good hoover. We need a revamped Post Office in our lovely Surbiton, perhaps like the clean modernised one in New Malden. Does anyone else agree?

Shops and resturants in Surbiton

Can someone open a restaurant in Surbiton that isn't a Curry or Chinese. I find it shocking that such an attractive and affluent area has a lack of good restaurants apart from Curry houses. Yes the French table is excellent but they must be laughing as they have no competition at all. Of course the lack of empty properties but there are still opportunities available

Cottage Grove...

Does anybody else have to park in Cottage Grove and is always worried about what scuffs and scratches you'll find on your car every day? Why can nobody park without causing damage to other peoples cars? Why can't people park in a space and not take up two spaces? Why can't people be honest and leave their details when they do leave a nice expensive scrape?

I propose a petition to have proper spaces marked out within the bays... Would anybody agree?

School no more.

Hi,

At the back of a house below top floor windows at the Surbiton Hill Park Road / King Charles Road crossroad juntion in fading paint is painted the words Berrylands School House. It can be seen coming up King Charles Road from Tolworth.
The school occupied the whole building but now is semi detached.
Anyone old enough to know more then I do about it?

Kevin WINDOLENE.
